Review: Hostiles

Rogue Hippo’s Review Score: 5.5

I’m a big history fan so I expected to like Hostiles, a film about Army Captain Joseph Blocker (Christian Bale) tasked with escorting Native American Chief Yellow Hawk (Wes Studi) across miles of hostile territory so that Yellow Hawk can die in his homeland.  Along the way, nothing goes according to plan and each day is a bitter struggle to survive.

I love survival stories.  I love history.  I should’ve loved Hostiles.  I didn’t.  Here’s why… Continue reading “Review: Hostiles”

Rogue Hippo’s Guide to MoviePass

I recently took the plunge and shelled out $115.35 for a 1-year subscription to MoviePass.  If you’re not familiar with MoviePass, a subscription will get you 1 free movie ticket every day.  As a guy who goes to a lot of movies, this seemed like a great deal; however I was skeptical that there might be a lot of restrictions or fine print.  Luckily, that has not been the case so far; and I’m here to break it down for those of you who might be considering MoviePass. Netflix and Chill – Valentine’s Day Edition

It’s February 14th and, depending on where you are in your relationship, you may be forced to put up with the corporate sham that is Valentine’s Day.  Enjoy your overpriced meal at a restaurant whose staff is simply trying to get you in and out the door as quickly as possible; this blog isn’t for you.

No, this blog is for the couples who are comfortable enough with each other to realize that Valentine’s Day isn’t worth the hassle.  So what are you doing tonight?  May I suggest Netflix and Chill? Continue reading “Netflix and Chill – Valentine’s Day Edition”

Review: Shadowrun Dragonfall

I’m going to cheat a little bit with this review.  As has been widely reported, I recently reviewed Shadowrun Returns and, in short, it’s a great game for fans of RPGs and turn-based combat.  Well Shadowrun Dragonfall is so similar that I’m going to piggy-back off of that review so I recommend that you read that one first. Review: Shadowrun Returns

My possibly-embarrassing New Year’s resolution was to play more video games and I’m off to a pretty good start in 2018.  Recently I played through Shadowrun Returns and I wanted to share my thoughts with the Outside is Overrated audience. Continue reading “Review: Shadowrun Returns”

Preview: ‘The Terror’ coming to AMC this March

**3/27 UPDATE** It appears that you can watch The Terror online via AMC’s website for a limited time so check it out while you can: The Terror

The Terror has been on my radar for a while now.  It was originally a fictional book, inspired by a true story, that is now being turned in to a television series on AMC. Continue reading “Preview: ‘The Terror’ coming to AMC this March”

Top 5 Stand-Up Comedians

I’ve been slacking lately with Top 5 Friday blogs… a thousand apologies, loyal readers!

Today I decided to mix it up and discuss my Top 5 stand-up comedians.  Comedy is an under-appreciated art, in my opinion.  A musical group can write a 3-minute song and get rich.  A stand-up comedian has to write 15, 30 or 60 minutes worth of jokes and perform in front of a drunken audience who won’t hesitate to start heckling if they aren’t impressed.  I’m not saying creating music is easy, but a 1988 Casio keyboard can come up with a good beat.  Yet there still isn’t a computer on on the planet that can tell a good joke.  With that in mind, it’s time to appreciate this under-appreciated art with…
