Review: The Meg

Rogue Hippo’s Review Score: 5

It’s hard to screw up a movie about a giant shark.  Movie-goers are willing to forgo quality acting and writing for some good old-fashioned shark carnage.  Somehow, The Meg failed to deliver even that. Continue reading “Review: The Meg”

Somehow the upcoming World War II movie Overlord completely evaded my radar until I stumbled on the trailer today.  Watch it:

Preview: Cobra Kai

A co-worker just informed me that YouTube Red is releasing an internet streams series called Cobra Kai.  That’s right, Cobra Kai, as in the evil dojo from Karate Kid.  Cobra Kai takes place 30 years after the events of Karate Kid; and while the times have changed, Daniel and Johnny still can’t seem to get along.  Yes, the original Daniel (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny (William Zabka) are going head to head once again… this time as adults. PLOT SUMMARY:  Lena (Natalie Portman) is part of a team of scientists tasked with entering, and explaining, The Shimmer.  The Shimmer is a continuously-expanding quarantine zone around the site of a meteor strike.  On top of that, The Shimmer gradually alters the DNA of all who enter it; oh, and by the way, no one ever returns.  Lena has returned, however; and the movie begins with Lena surrounded by a team of scientists who ask her to explain what happened while she was inside The Shimmer.  She proceeds to tell them the story of what befell her team. Review: Hostiles

Rogue Hippo’s Review Score: 5.5

I’m a big history fan so I expected to like Hostiles, a film about Army Captain Joseph Blocker (Christian Bale) tasked with escorting Native American Chief Yellow Hawk (Wes Studi) across miles of hostile territory so that Yellow Hawk can die in his homeland.  Along the way, nothing goes according to plan and each day is a bitter struggle to survive.

I love survival stories.  I love history.  I should’ve loved Hostiles.  I didn’t.  Here’s why… Continue reading “Review: Hostiles”

Rogue Hippo’s Guide to MoviePass

I recently took the plunge and shelled out $115.35 for a 1-year subscription to MoviePass.  If you’re not familiar with MoviePass, a subscription will get you 1 free movie ticket every day.  As a guy who goes to a lot of movies, this seemed like a great deal; however I was skeptical that there might be a lot of restrictions or fine print.  Luckily, that has not been the case so far; and I’m here to break it down for those of you who might be considering MoviePass.
