October is a busy month. It’s one of the most intense months of the year at work. The Vikings season is in full swing. It’s my mother-in-laws birthday. We host a Halloween party, and the dozen or so trees in our yard drop a cubic ton (or two) of leaves for us to clean up. Somehow, in the middle of it all, was a bountiful harvest of gaming.
Paul Charchian is a Minnesota-based fantasy football analyst and radio host, and the creator of Fanball.com. A lifelong gamer, he hosts Video Games Weekly on KFAN on Tuesday nights. The VR enthusiast recently took some time to chat with OiO about his career and his passion for gaming.
Sam Charchian is a video game industry veteran, with 10 years of service at Microsoft and five more at Sony. Originally from Eden Prairie, Minnesota, Charchian knew from a young age that he had to be a computer programmer. His passions for programming and video games led him to a career that included launching Xbox Live, and working with some of the biggest developers in the industry.
For most of my life, I’ve had a fear/general distaste about using public restrooms to drop a deuce. I mean, sometimes it’s unavoidable, but if there is any foreseeable way for me to capture home field advantage, I am capable of holding my bowels for long periods of time. My dad and brother will probably never let go of the fact that I once drove 20 minutes to a casino for a bathroom break when we were ice fishing.
Gaming has been a personal passion since the first time I saw an arcade in a mall. I have owned every major console released since the Sega Genesis, with the exception of the original XBox. For me, a Saturday spent playing video or board games with my wife or a few close friends would always be more appealing than a night out. Gaming is, and always will be a part of me.
So what happens when a hardcore gamer brings life into the world? Would my gaming self cease to exist, buried in a cavalcade of dirty cloth diapers? Would the world be forced to evolve without my tsunami of treachery and weiner jokes?
Rare’s Sea of Thieves promises a pirate’s bounty. The shared world pirate adventure allows you and your friends to crew a ship, explore islands, hunt for treasure and plunder other players. An amazing premise, but my first three hours with the game left me feeling salty.
John Gallagher is an entertainment illustrator who has worked in screen-based entertainment since 1995. His resume includes four seasons working on The Flash, as well as two on Supergirl, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Falling Skies, Once Upon a Time and dozens of others. He also previously spent nine years working in video games at Bioware Corp prior to moving to film in 2008.
