It’s February 14th and, depending on where you are in your relationship, you may be forced to put up with the corporate sham that is Valentine’s Day. Enjoy your overpriced meal at a restaurant whose staff is simply trying to get you in and out the door as quickly as possible; this blog isn’t for you.
No, this blog is for the couples who are comfortable enough with each other to realize that Valentine’s Day isn’t worth the hassle. So what are you doing tonight? May I suggest Netflix and Chill?
That’s right… buy your alcohol of choice, order your favorite delivery food, then watch some Netflix and chill with your significant other. The challenge is to find a movie that both of you can agree on. I’m going to rely on stereotypes and hypothesize that one of you may want to watch something involving couples while the other would prefer some action and adventure. Luckily, the self-proclaimed King of Netflix is here to help you compromise…
The Invitation
Let’s face it, most of us live a comfortable life in which the worst thing we have to deal with is an awkward dinner party. That should allow all of us to relate to The Invitation. It begins as a fancy dinner among old friends who haven’t seen each other for years; but as the night progresses, old drama begins to resurface and it’s clear that many of the party-goers have some deep, emotional issues. Once the hosts show their enlightened-lifestyle promotional video, motives are questioned, suspicions are heightened, and you begin to wonder if there is more than just an awkward dinner party going on. Logan Marshall-Green does a fantastic job as Will, the main protagonist. His performance constantly kept me wondering if he was crazy or if he was the only person seeing things clearly; and you’ll have to watch The Invitation to find out the truth. This is my #1 recommendation and It’ll keep you on the edge of your seat.
Honeymoon
Ugh, Netflix screwed me on this one because I watched Honeymoon less than two weeks ago and now it’s no longer available to watch instantly; but I think it’s still good enough to spend $3.99 to watch it on YouTube. In Honeymoon, Bea and Paul are a young, newlywed couple spending their honeymoon at a rustic lake cabin. It’s the off-season so the lake is largely devoid of other humans, which provides some welcome privacy at first but quickly becomes creepy as strange things begin happening in the night. Bea starts acting strangely, Paul is hearing things in the forest, and the only other couple on the lake aren’t helping matters. Things keep getting weirder adn weirder until the climax when you’ll find yourself holding your significant other for comfort… or eyeing them mistrustfully. Either way, you won’t soon forget Honeymoon. This movie also hits home with my #1 demographic which happens to be cabin-vacationing mid-westerners. If you don’t watch Honeymoon on Valentine’s Day, watch it then next time you head to the lake and freak yourself out.
It Follows
Lastly, if for some reason you want to cock-block yourself on Valentine’s Day, It Follows should get the job done. The premise is simple: there’s a ghost/monster/demon thing that constantly pursues anyone who is cursed. How do you become cursed? Well, the curse is basically an STD. If you’re cursed and you “chill” with someone, the monster will target them instead of you. That person can either “chill” with someone else and pass the curse along, or he/she will eventually be killed by the monster, in which case the monster then targets the previously cursed individual again. Yea, I know… the premise is pure Hollywood drivel; but it makes for an entertaining movie. This can also be viewed for $2.99 on YouTube if you don’t have Netflix.
There you have it. These are Rogue Hippo’s top 3 choices if you want to Netflix and Chill this Valentine’s Day. Good luck and Happy Valentine’s Day!
Until Next Time,
