A co-worker just informed me that YouTube Red is releasing an internet streams series called Cobra Kai. That’s right, Cobra Kai, as in the evil dojo from Karate Kid. Cobra Kai takes place 30 years after the events of Karate Kid; and while the times have changed, Daniel and Johnny still can’t seem to get along. Yes, the original Daniel (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny (William Zabka) are going head to head once again… this time as adults.
Now, my first thought was “This is going to be complete garbage!” Then I watched a couple of trailers:
Admit it… you laughed at the window washing line.

Did I just see what I think I just saw? Was that Daniel-Son (who looks like a used car salesman) karate-kicking a latte out of an old man’s hand?
Suddenly I want to watch this show.
Sure, the actors are getting long in the tooth and the fight scenes may border on ridiculous; but it appears that the show isn’t going to take itself too seriously which is the perfect way to play it.
So, what I first thought was another lazy attempt to milk a famous franchise now seems like it could have the potential to be a clever, comical reunion with some classic characters from my youth. Feel free to share your thoughts below.
