Netflix has some good shit!
I apologize for being uncouth, but I keep finding new things on Netflix that have me saying, “Damn, this is some good shit!”
Everyone already knows about the high-profile shows and movies so I won’t talk about them. I’m talking about something that is completely off of the radar…
TURBO KID

Kick ass! If you’re like me, you grew up in the 80’s (the greatest generation!) and that trailer just connected with you on many levels… those sweet special effects, that perfect 80’s music and that awesome 80’s hair! If you didn’t grow up in the 80’s, I pity you and your mediocre childhood. However, even if you had a second-rate, non-80’s childhood, you still have a chance to briefly glimpse the Utopian nirvana that you missed out on… by watching TurboKid!
TurboKid is about a boy doing is best to survive in an apocalyptic future. He spends his days scavenging for supplies and avoiding the wasteland; an area controlled by roving gangs who pass the time by sticking heads on pikes and inventing unique torture devices (the bicycle scene is sooo good).
Our hero is forced to face his fears when his only friend, Apple, is captured by the gang-leader, Zeus (played, with the usual brilliance, by Michael Ironside). Luckily, a grizzled cowboy decides to mentor young TurboKid and the pair must battle through hordes of barbaric gang-members using whatever weapons they can find; be it beach umbrellas, gnome-sticks or the fabled Turbo-Blaster!
At this point, I can only assume that you’re driving to your nearest convenience store so that you can purchase your favorite snacks in anticipation of a radical TurboKid movie night (I prefer Reese’s Pieces and gummi peach O’s)… but wait! Don’t forget to watch this TurboKid short film on Youtube:

It gives a little bit of background information and help sets up some of the events in TurboKid.
TurboKid feels a lot like KungFury with it’s mock-80’s cinema style. Both movies absolutely nail it; and while Kung Fury experienced a wave of hype, TurboKid has been relatively unheard of (at least in my circles). They’re both worth a watch, and if you haven’t seen Kung Fury yet, you’re welcome:
